Ready to completely change your life and become a professional freediving instructor? This program is for you, whether you have experience or not! In three months, we will take you from being a complete beginner to a competent freediver and then onto being a certified professional instructor. A lifetime of underwater adventuring starts here.
This intensive training and education process is tailored to your individual progression, needs and goals. Any freediving-seeking adventurer is welcome to join.
Diving Costa Rica, you’ll greet tropical fish, Spinner Dolphins, Rays and Reef Sharks all year with seasonal Whale species such as Orcas, Short-finned Pilots and Humpbacks! Tamarindo is also a mecca for surfers and blue water Sport Fishermen with some of the best spearfishing in the world due to its deep, clear, thriving conditions. You’ll have access to daily boat trips exploring the best dive sites with unlimited fun dives and reef spearfishing in perfectly tropical waters of above 20°C (68°F) all year long.
You’ll enjoy wonderful wildlife, spectacular beaches, volcanoes, rainforests, lagoons and so much more including a short boat ride to Catalina Islands. If that’s not enough, want to come and meet our sloths, toucans, monkeys and macaws?

NEED TO KNOW
In order to achieve your Zero to Hero Freediving Certifications, no prior freediving experience is required however you must be 18 years of age or older and be a confident swimmer.
You will also need your Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training completed within the past 24 months – this can be done in Tamarindo.
At the end of the program and course you will achieve a 4 minute breath hold, swim 90m (295ft) in dynamic apnea and perform comfortable dives beyond 40m (131ft) depth. If you are unable to complete your course in this time, you’re welcome to add additional training time as you wish.
An AIDA Instructor is qualified to teach the AIDA1, AIDA2 Freediver Course, AIDA3 Advanced Freediver Course and the AIDA Monofin Course.
WHAT TO BRING
We’ll provide all the required freediving gear, just bring the travel essentials:
- Swimmers, towel, reef safe sunscreen, sunglasses, hat
- Reusable waterbottle
- Travel calm tablets if you’re prone to motion sickness – don’t worry, we won’t be going far on the boats
- If you have your own gear, bring it with you for ultimate comfort

ITINERARY
Prepare for 3 epic months of Freediving. We’ll be heading out on the water in a fully equipped 32ft Boston Whaler or 18ft Panga boat.
THEORY: develop an understanding of advanced physiological and mental implications and safety practices. And how to teach everything related to Freediving.
DRY TRAINING: Master equalization and breathing, stretching and relaxation techniques.
STATIC: Practice breathing and relaxation techniques to extend your breath-hold times easily and safely beyond 4 minutes.
DYNAMIC: Master your diving techniques, body position, turns, finning technique for distances of 90m (295ft) and further.
OPEN WATER: Progress your depth adaptation comfortably and fine-tune your skills and techniques to reach depths of 40m (131ft) comfortably. Learn all elements of teaching and training with thorough rescue procedures, stamina tests and everything you need to know about handling ropes, performing knots, buoy set-up and open water equipment.
TRAVEL GUIDELINES

GETTING AROUND
Tamarindo is a small beachside town accessible by car, taxi or shuttle. The international airports are Juan Santamaría (SJO) and Daniel Oduber Quirós (LIR). Flying into SJO, you’re a 4.5hr drive/shuttle away. Flying into LIR, you’re a 1.5hr drive away. Local airlines Nature Air and Sansa offer daily flights to/from Tamarindo from SJO and LIR.
